To be eligible to apply for a security guard card registration, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Undergo a criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ)  and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
  • Complete a 40-hour course of required training



POWER TO ARREST COURSE OUTLINE

The Power to Arrest Course consists of four (4) hours of training in both of the following two (2) subjects:

A. Powers to Arrest - 4 hours

Objective: To familiarize and instruct the individual on the training topics delineated at Business and Professions Code section 7583.7, including, without limitation, legal aspects, techniques, liability, and company requirements relating to the arrest of an individual.  The training will utilize the Department of Consumer Affairs' Power to Arrest Training Manual and may include lecture, discussion, exercises and role-playing.

Overview of Power to Arrest Manual and subject matter.

Definition of arrest and discussion on the implications to the subject, the guard and the company.

Lecture/discussion on escalation and de-escalation techniques in the use of force. 

Lecture/discussion in the use of restraint techniques and their implications.

Discussion of trespass laws and implications of enforcement.

Completion of the Power to Arrest Training Manual Test with 100% score in accordance with the Manual's Administering Instructions.

B. Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) & Terrorism Awareness - 4 hours

Objective: To familiarize and instruct the individual on the subject matter and observation skills required to identify and report precursor activities to a terrorist event, react appropriately, report the occurrence of a terrorist event, and remain safe while helping control the scene after a terrorist event.  The training will utilize the Department of Consumer Affairs' Weapons of Mass Destruction & Terrorism Awareness for Security Professionals course consisting of a Digital Video Disk (DVD), Student Workbook and Facilitator Manual.

Proper training in the use of handcuffs is vital to officers.  Handcuffs are among the most often used tool by officers, yet training is typically lacking.  Studies show that over 67% of resistance by subjects occurs after the first handcuff has been applied.  All too often the result is injury and/or death to either the officer or subject

Certification:
Upon Completion of the PATH® Course you will be issued a Certificate of Completion and a Wallet I.D. card which will be valid for (3) three years.  Certificates and ID cards can only be issued to security officers, bail enforcement agents or other qualified personnel.
Handcuffing is a Dangerous Business

Since before the 1960’s officers have experimented with different handcuffing techniques.  Unfortunately death and injuries to officers was the result.  In the 1990’s, handcuffing in the free standing and prone positions gained acceptance.   Prone positions with proper arm-locks seem to be the safest for officers.

Purpose of the Training:
The purpose of the PATH training is to present principles, skills and techniques of understanding and using handcuffs.  The techniques presented are practical and effective.
Topics to be covered include the safest approach and positioning for handcuffing, handcuffing resistive subjects, safely disengage, removing handcuffs, and the use of various types of handcuffs, among others.  This is a hands on course part of the training include situational scenarios

Oleoresin Capsicum Aerosol Training

Purpose of the Training:
The purpose of the (OC) training is to present principles, skills and techniques of understanding and using OC such as; learning the methods of movement, spraying techniques, disengagement, and the proper defensive positions.  The training will also provide with contact and cover- ground situations, contact and cover- standing situation, defense against moving attacks, multiple aggressors, and the defend, move, draw, and spray techniques.


You will learn how to:

  • ID the stages of conflict in order to: recognize the threat, reduce the threat, and determine how and when to use force
  • Apply state-of-the-art tactical concepts such as: spraying techniques, disengagement, proper defensive positions, methods of movement, multiple opponent defense, and contact and cover system, defense against moving attacks, group defense, and drawing techniques
  • Avoid liability suits through: Certified training, understanding the effects of OC spray, identifying factors which justify OC use, and proper OC incident documentation

 

What is Oleoresin Capsicum?

A mixture of resin and essential oil mixed with several varieties of peppers i.e. Cayenne peppers.  It is a convenient aerosol spray which can be used as a protection device.  Oleoresin Capsicum is also known as “Pepper Spray.”
What are the effects of OC?

The effects of OC vary from person to person.  OC can affect the skin, face, eyes, and the respiratory system and the effect is immediately.  The deterrent is reliable; it has no long term effects, non-lethal, and completely safe.  The effects of OC last around 30-45 minutes.
Required Equipment:

Inert training unit (OC) will be provided for training use only.
Wear light, comfortable clothing with tennis shoes or gym shoes.  You may want to bring an extra shirt.
