Farms with livestock should consider adding security officers to their security plan. It is hard to make a living as a farmer, regardless of size. When a farmer’s livestock or cattle are stolen, the theft directly affects the farmer’s livelihood. According to the chief of California’s Bureau of Livestock Identification, 1,317 head of cattle were reported stolen or missing in California in 2013. Thieves see farms as easy targets, considering livestock and cattle could go for hundreds to thousands of dollars per animal. The most common deterrent against thieves are fences, lights and cattle tagging, but thieves are starting to see them as minor inconveniences.
If a conflict is to arise due to theft, your security plan should include an observer for proof to ensure prosecution of thieves. Cattle theft has been proven hard to prosecute over the years, leading to many thieves avoiding paying fines or serving jail time. To combat legal evasive thieves, Assembly Bill 924 was enacted to set potential fines for cattle thieves. Many farmers and ranchers do not report cattle and livestock theft with the fear of becoming targets again. By implementing an observer into your security plan, you will be able to further deter future criminals because you will have an abundant amount of proof for the authorities.
